Marie-Paule Gonthier holds a PhD degree in Human Nutrition from the Faculty of Medicine of Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 2003. Her work consisted on exploring the role of gut microbiota on the metabolic fate and bioavailability of dietary polyphenols in humans. After a post-doctoral period in the Endocannabinoid Research Group led by Prof. Vincenzo Di Marzo (National Research Center of Naples, Italy), she was hired assistant professor for 7 years at the University of La Réunion, France. In 2013, she became full professor at the Faculty of Health of the University of La Réunion. There, she teaches biochemistry and nutrition, and supervises students from the 3rd year of Medicine school. Since 2015, she’s a member of DéTROI group and contributes to explore the mechanisms involved in the dysregulation of metabolic and inflammatory functions of different cellular types (adipocytes, endothelial cells, Schwann cells) in conditions related to obesity, type 2 diabetes and neurovascular disorders (stroke, peripheral neuropathy). Moreover, her work aims to evaluate the protective effects of plant polyphenols as new nutritional and pharmacological strategies helping to reduce metabolic and neurovascular complications during obesity/type 2 diabetes. She currently investigates the links between oral/gut microbiota dysbiosis, inflammation and metabolic disorders during obesity, and evaluates plant polyphenol benefits to counteract microbiota dysbiosis impact on metabolic health. This work is based on in vitro cellular models, preclinical animal models and clinical trials conducted with clinicians from La Réunion University Hospital.
